Behavioral Health and Performance Operations During the Space Shuttle Program

    Get PDF
Prior to the Columbia STS 107 disaster in 2003, the Johnson Space Center s Behavioral Health and Performance Group (BHP) became involved in Space Shuttle Operations on an as needed basis, occasionally acting as a consultant and primarily addressing crew-crew personality conflicts. The BHP group also assisted with astronaut selection at every selection cycle beginning in 1991. Following STS 107, an event that spawned an increased need of behavioral health support to STS crew members and their dependents, BHP services to the Space Shuttle Program were enhanced beginning with the STS 114 Return to Flight mission in 2005. These services included the presence of BHP personnel at STS launches and landings for contingency support, a BHP briefing to the entire STS crew at L-11 months, a private preflight meeting with the STS Commander at L-9 months, and the presence of a BHP consultant at the L-1.5 month Family Support Office briefing to crew and family members. The later development of an annual behavioral health assessment of all active astronauts also augmented BHP s Space Shuttle Program specific services, allowing for private meetings with all STS crew members before and after each mission. The components of each facet of these BHP Space Shuttle Program support services will be presented, along with valuable lessons learned, and with recommendations for BHP involvement in future short duration space mission

How is a professional development programme related to the development of university teachersā€™ self-efficacy beliefs and teaching conceptions?

    Get PDF
This study explores how the impact of a five ECTS professional development programme for university teachers affects their self-efficacy beliefs and teaching conceptions using a mixed methods approach. For the quantitative part of the study, participants completed pre-post surveys. From these surveys, we find that the programme led to an overall significant increase in reported self-efficacy beliefs. A sub-sample of ten participants participated in the qualitative part, which consists of four phases: three reflective assignments and an interview. Individual teachers demonstrate a dominant teaching conception in each phase and in almost half of the sub-sample it developed over time, moving from a teacher-centered to a more student-centered conception. When examining the development of self-efficacy and teaching conceptions collectively, three development groups are identified. Noteworthy is that teacher development is credited to the programme as a whole and not to a specific aspect

Clinical evaluation of glucagon by continuous infusion in the treatment of low cardiac output states

A continuous infusion of glucagon in an average dose of 4 mg. per hour over several days produced distinct improvement in the clinical state of 12 of 16 patients. Improvement was noted by an increase in blood pressure and urinary output and decrease in dyspnea, pulmonary rales, diaphoresis, and peripheral edema when present. Serum potassium must be carefully monitored. The rise in blood glucose has not been a clinical problem. No cardiac arrhythmias were induced by glucagon, and as cardiac function improved, the heart rate usually decreased. Nausea was the most frequent side effect, but no toxic effects or tachyphylaxis were observed. Long-term therapy with glucagon infusion is both safe and highly efficacious in selected patients with severe cardiovascular disease states and is the treatment of choice in cardiac decompensation secondary to beta-blocking agents.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/32778/1/0000151.pd

Measurements of mass, length and valve diameters from normal formalin-fixed ovine hearts

    Get PDF
Hearts from 60 Merino sheep of known age, sex and live mass and with no known history of disease were collected and fixed in buffered 10% formalin. Systematic light microscopical examination did not indicate any abnormality in hearts of any of the sheep. The mass of various parts of the hearts, the length of the hearts and the diameters of the heart valves were measured to establish a basis for quantitative assessment of possible pathological changes associated with the ingestion of cardiotoxic plants. The mass measurements and, to a lesser degree, the lengths of the hearts varied considerably, but the ratio of the mass of the left ventricle plus ventricular septum divided by the right venticular free wall mass was remarkably stable, and is promising as an indicator of right ventricular hypertrophy. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi. ISML: an interface specification meta-language

    Get PDF
In this paper we present an abstract metaphor model situated within a model-based user interface framework. The inclusion of metaphors in graphical user interfaces is a well established, but mostly craft-based strategy to design. A substantial body of notations and tools can be found within the model-based user interface design literature, however an explicit treatment of metaphor and its mappings to other design views has yet to be addressed. We introduce the Interface Specification Meta-Language (ISML) framework and demonstrate its use in comparing the semantic and syntactic features of an interactive system. Challenges facing this research are outlined and further work proposed

Broiler pulmonary hypertension syndrome. III. Commercial broiler strains differ in their susceptibility

    Get PDF
Broilers of 4 different commercial strains were kept during winter at an altitude of 1 350m. The birds were slaughtered at weekly intervals and their relative right ventricular mass (pulmonary arterial pressure index = API values) determined. In addition, the incidence of ascites was recorded. Two of the strains suffered high losses from ascites, while the other 2 showed a certain degree of resistance. The former 2 groups had a higher mean API and a greater percentage of high API values in clinically normal birds than the other 2 groups. The group with the lowest incidence of ascites achieved the highest mean live mass at 51 days. There was also a decrease in mean API with age in clinically normal birds. There was no difference in the incidence of ascites between males and females. The articles have been scanned in colour with a HP Scanjet 5590; 600dpi. Global Networks of Trade and Bits

Considerable efforts have been made in recent years to produce detailed topologies of the Internet. Although Internet topology data have been brought to the attention of a wide and somewhat diverse audience of scholars, so far they have been overlooked by economists. In this paper, we suggest that such data could be effectively treated as a proxy to characterize the size of the "digital economy" at country level and outsourcing: thus, we analyse the topological structure of the network of trade in digital services (trade in bits) and compare it with that of the more traditional flow of manufactured goods across countries. To perform meaningful comparisons across networks with different characteristics, we define a stochastic benchmark for the number of connections among each country-pair, based on hypergeometric distribution. Original data are thus filtered by means of different thresholds, so that we only focus on the strongest links, i.e., statistically significant links. We find that trade in bits displays a sparser and less hierarchical network structure, which is more similar to trade in high-skill manufactured goods than total trade. Lastly, distance plays a more prominent role in shaping the network of international trade in physical goods than trade in digital services.Comment: 25 pages, 6 figure
